On May 18th, Jeff Jacklin gave us a very amusing and informative talk about his life as a football referee. Jeff was a semi-pro footballer, and then trained as a referee for local football games. Jeff demonstrated the seven items a referee must bring to a game with him (the one we didn’t get was the football itself!), and showed members videos of games where we had to give our own opinion of the correct referee decision, according to the 17 laws of Association Football. Jeff told us why referees run diagonally across the field, shared amusing anecdotes of referees’ experiences and explained some of the technology issues with the modern game.
