Talk on 6th November 2019

On November 6th, Geoff Twentyman talked to us about ‘The Golden Age of Radio Comedy’.

Geoff, an enthusiastic and knowledgeable presenter, spoke mainly about the 1950s, when post war entertainment was music halls and films, with TV in its infancy, and many entertainers met and developed their styles and material from WW2. Geoff highlighted five of the most popular radio shows of the era, describing their creation and playing brief excerpts from them that brought lots of memories from members. Much Binding in The Marsh and Educating Archie were followed by The Goon Show, Hancock’s Half Hour and Al Read. Lots of very familiar entertainers, with catch phrases that are still in use today.
