Talk on 21st February 2018

On February 21st, Terry Frazier gave us an excellent talk about the National Trust (NT) in the Lake District and NE England.

In a beautifully illustrated presentation Terry, an NT volunteer for 44 years, took us on a journey through history and through the many NT properties in the Lake District and NE England. The Trust’s inception in 1895 was born out of a concern that the spread of industry and growth in population was destroying the beauty of the countryside. From its first Lake District property in 1905, NT has expanded massively through donations, sometimes in lieu of Death Duties, but also through direct purchases of property and estates. The NT now has 5 million members and owns a quarter of the Lake District and 775 miles of Britain’s coast!

Terry’s talk introduced Probus members enthusiastically to many fantastic NT properties and locations, and I suspect that there’ll be a lot of exciting visits made this summer as a result of this talk.

Our next meeting will be on March 7th, when we will have a talk about Rudding Park.
